Liposomal Supplements: The Science, Hype, and Opportunity
Liposomal products are everywhere, but no brand explains them well. What are they, why do they command premium prices, and how do they work?
Liposomal products are everywhere, but no brand explains them well. What are they, why do they command premium prices, and how do they work?

If you’ve spent any time in the supplement world lately, you’ve probably noticed one word showing up everywhere.
Liposomes.
Suddenly, every other product claims to be liposomal for better absorption.
But is it real science? Or just clever marketing?
From science to opportunity, let’s break down the category.
Think of liposomes like tiny bubble taxis.
Regular supplement delivery is like trying to walk through a hostile city…stomach acid, digestive enzymes, gut wall barriers can all keep the bioactives from accomplishing their goal. Many don't make it. Many arrive too degraded to do anything useful.
Liposomal supplements are different. They're wrapped in the same material as your cell membranes (phospholipids) which means they're not just protected on the trip, they're recognized when they arrive. Instead of knocking on the door, they can fuse directly with cells and deliver their cargo intact.

The bottom line for supplement brands?
For the right ingredients, liposomes have been shown to absorb 2-5 times better compared to standard capsules or tablets.
Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is one of the most talked-about ingredients for promoting longevity and energy. Consumers associate it with aging support, cellular energy, recovery, and vitality.
And no wonder!
It’s a vital coenzyme found in every living cell, acting as a crucial molecule for converting food into energy, repairing damaged DNA, and regulating cell survival.
There's a catch, though.
You can't really supplement NAD+ directly. The molecule itself is too large and unstable to survive digestion and cross into cells in meaningful amounts. What brands actually formulate with are NAD+ precursors — compounds like NR (nicotinamide riboside) or NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) that the body converts into NAD+ once inside cells.
And those precursors are fragile. Heat, light, and stomach acid can degrade them before they do anything useful. Since the conversion to NAD+ happens inside cells, getting the precursor there intact matters enormously.
Liposomes are the answer.
By enveloping NAD+ precursors in a protective shell, they can better travel through the digestive system, and get to where they need to go intact.
The global market for liposomal supplements sits between $650 million to about a billion dollars, and products in this category can easily retail for $60, $70, sometimes even $90.
But why?
In short, you’re offering a supplement that carries meaningful health benefits over the alternative. Liposomal products solve an important problem and more customers are understanding and demanding it.
And the right consumers are willing to pay for quality.
There are four big reasons pushing the trend.
There’s no reason to overengineer a product if we don’t need to. Some ingredients — like creatine, magnesium glycinate, and sodium electrolytes — already absorb pretty well.
But others, like glutathione, CoQ10, and NAD+ precursors degrade during digestion, and need some help entering the body.
Adding liposomal delivery to products like this can increase effectiveness and keep customers returning as they see better results.
If I were starting a supplement brand today, these are the liposomal concepts that would catch my eye.
And better yet?
Steuart Nutrition has the capabilities you’ll need to turn these concepts into reality. Get a custom quote here.
These two ingredients are the gateway drugs of the liposomal category. And for good reason.
Vitamin C is water-soluble, which means the body excretes what it can't absorb fast enough. Standard doses above 1,000mg are largely wasted. Liposomal delivery bypasses that threshold, allowing meaningfully higher absorption without the GI distress high-dose Vitamin C is known for.
Glutathione is the other compelling candidate. It's one of the body's most important antioxidants, but oral glutathione supplements have historically been viewed skeptically because the molecule degrades in the gut before it reaches systemic circulation. Liposomal glutathione sidesteps that problem almost entirely.
Both ingredients have strong consumer recognition, clean safety profiles, and a built-in "upgrade" story — same ingredient, actually works this time — that makes them ideal entry points for brands new to liposomal. If you're building a premium wellness SKU and don't want to start with something exotic, start here.
A 15 mL shot could easily retail between $65 and $85, depending on ingredient quality.
Why?
NAD+ and resveratrol are two of the most talked-about anti-aging compounds on the market — and they complement each other unusually well. NAD+ is the fuel for cellular repair and energy metabolism. Resveratrol activates sirtuins, the proteins that actually use that fuel. Together, they tell a clean, compelling story that premium longevity consumers already understand.
Formulation side note: you can't supplement NAD+ directly. The molecule is too large and unstable to survive digestion and absorb efficiently. What brands actually formulate with are NAD+ precursors. Think: compounds like NR (nicotinamide riboside) or NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide), which the body converts into NAD+ inside cells. Every "NAD+ product" on the market works this way, but few brands explain it. That transparency is actually a differentiator.
Magnesium is already one of the top-selling supplements in the U.S. Search interest for magnesium glycinate surged 143% in 2024 alone.
The problem with most magnesium products isn't the ingredient. It's the delivery. Standard forms cause GI distress. Absorption is inconsistent. Many users never feel a difference.
Liposomal bisglycinate fixes both problems in one SKU.
The positioning writes itself: sleep quality and stress recovery are the top two reasons consumers buy magnesium. Add a premium delivery story to an ingredient people already trust, and you have a product that's easy to explain, easy to sell, and built for repeat purchase.
The beauty supplement market is exploding, and collagen is at the center of it.
But most collagen products compete on price and dose, not mechanism. A liposomal collagen shot – positioned around enhanced delivery to skin, joints, and connective tissue – gives a brand a genuine scientific differentiator in a crowded space.
Format-wise, a 15–30 mL daily shot with a clean flavor profile plays directly into the liquid supplement trend already driving the category. This concept also layers well with complementary ingredients like hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
Many brands fail here.
Liposomes are complex molecules, no doubt, but there’s no reason to default to jargon to get the story across.
“Phospholipid bilayer” and “enhanced bioavailability pathways” might be a step too far. Most customers don’t know what it means…or care to dig in.
Instead, keep it simple: “This technology helps your body absorb more of what you’re taking.”
Or even better: “Get more out of every dose.”
Clear, intuitive, and fits neatly on a product label.
Liposomal supplements are more than just marketing hype.
Brands that nail the format can field SKUs that retail at a premium.
But success isn’t easy. We’ve seen it go both ways:
If you’re considering a liposomal product, give us a call. We’ll help you go beyond the formulation into proper manufacturing and developing a product story that helps you sell it.
